Providing free haircuts families

Fades & Arches Barbershop’s “Families Helping Community Program” provides free haircuts to kids, elderly, first responders, veterans, families, and individuals experiencing financial hardships.  We provide aid for children and parents needing financial assistance in their self-care. We’ve experienced many clients asking for help paying for haircuts. I can see the relief in a family’s eyes when I tell them, “Don’t worry about paying for the haircut!” The demand for haircutting services exceeds our ability to accommodate those in need. Sometimes we can’t offer help; it’s disheartening not being able to help everyone in need. An individual’s ability to be groomed affects how they present themselves to the world.

These families often are already in vulnerable situations dealing with trauma caused by job loss, home foreclosure, etc., preventing essential responsibilities from being handled. Families and individuals are uncomfortable asking for help; for some it creates anxiety and that’s understandable. Financial hardships are usually private matters discussed amongst members of households.

These socioeconomic disparities distract kids from concentrating on learning and increase behavior problems. Children not having a haircut can have numerous adverse effects, face bullying, harassment, depression, and stress. Adults may suffer similar traumatic experiences, unable to take care of themselves and their families. Our program helps with self-care helps can refocus a child’s “frame of mind” concentrating on studies rather than household burdens.
